We recently teamed with local MI playwright (and good friend) Joseph Zettelmaier to write a song for his newest production, Dead Man's Shoes. Described as a "deeply twisted comedy that steals your heart – after breaking your ankles, punching you in the gut and puncturing your lungs," this show follows the story of Injun Bill and his sidekick, Froggy on their quest for vengeance in the old Wild West. The Ballad of Injun Bill is performed live by the actors during the show and is interwoven into the script as a way to transition from scene to scene.
We had the pleasure of setting music to Joseph Zettelmaier's gritty and poignant lyrics and we're excited to share them with you! We had SO much fun recording this! Dead Man's Shoes will be running through February 26th at the Williamston Theater. It will also be performed at Performance Network in downtown Ann Arbor from March 8th through April 8th.
Please make plans to see this gritty and poignant show (and say hello to Rochelle who will be stage managing this production at both theaters)!
The Ballad of Injun Bill is available for FREE download on our BandCamp page right now! Enjoy! :-)

Of course it would be so cliché to say something about The Potter's Field's debut CD "Pleasureville" being "a pleasure" to listen to, but it wouldn't be wrong. In fact it'd be spot on.
The first song "On With The Show" is a favorite of mine. I love tunes that flow and set a mood, scene and story. This song sure does it for me. The first time I heard of The Potter's Field, it was a show put on by Rochelle alone (WinterFolk at the Charlevoix Public Library) and I knew I had to hear more. Shortly thereafter, I enjoyed this song at one of their concerts (Shorts in Bellaire). When I first heard John and Rochelle together my mind immediately began a search to express what I was feeling and hearing. After the show I told them their fit of song and music was like John was the heaven that held the voice of an angel, Rochelle. Hey, wait till you hear them and give it try. See if you can come up with something better.
The stories they tell will grab hold of your music mind and take you to places and feelings that only good song writing can do.
John and Rochelle’s song writing is genius and sometimes very introspective. One Eyed Bird, Pleasureville, Ghosts, Antietam Creek, Home and Don't Look Down When You Go are songs full of thought and depth. The stories they tell will grab hold of your music mind and take you to places and feelings that only good song writing can do.
The harmonies that John and Rochelle gift us make it easy and interesting to listen to Pleasureville.
When you need a break from the emotional story telling you can sit back and enjoy the simple joy of songs like Nothin' All Day, You know What I Like and Sweetest Waste of Time. The harmonies that John and Rochelle gift us make it easy and interesting to listen to Pleasureville. A good place to start all in all. It’s like a place you can look at the heavens at night and actually hear an angel or two sing and that's the music of Pleasureville. Thank you John and Rochelle.
Come check it out in our local music collection here at the library and I'd enjoy hearing your comments on “Pleasureville" or any of the music that we have in our collection.

Where on earth did the summer go? It's hard to believe that autumn has now officially arrived, but that hasn't slowed The Potter's Field down - I think they're invigorated by the cooler temperatures!
September was a very busy month for John and Rochelle. Work has continued at a fast and furious pace on the upcoming CD, and I'm happy to report that the tracks I've heard are simply amazing! I can't wait for all of you to hear the results of their hard work and dedication. I'm sure, like me, you'll be delighted with the song selection, captivated and often moved by the lyrics, and at times given over to goose-bumps by the tight harmonies and vocal prowess demonstrated in this initial effort. Yes, I know I'm their manager and I'm supposed to be enthusiastic, but I'm also a long-time diehard lover of really good music, and I'm happy to report that you'll be hearing some of the best music the Midwest has to offer in November. Remember to mark your calendars now for the Trinity House Theatre CD Release Party on Sunday, November 20!
John's hard work on the engineering and production side of the CD also shines through. Operating as Rocket Boy Records, John has devoted countless long hours of time in the recording studio tweaking, fine-tuning, and mixing, in addition to the required picking and singing on each track. Thanks, Rocket Boy, for your attention to detail and your tenacity in striving for the best possible outcome. If you're a musician or performer in need of recording production and technical assistance, check out Rocket Boy Records - you'll be glad you did.
Of course, there has been life outside of the recording studio, as well. John and Rochelle headed north to Chamberlin's Ole Forest Inn in Curtis, MI to kick off the month of September - always a favorite treat for them to play for audiences in this beautiful environment. There have been several appearances at Farmer's Markets and coffee houses, and even a gig at a premier exercise studio (John being exposed to Pilates still boggles my mind - Rochelle rules in that area!) The month wrapped up with another trip up north to Traverse City, Bellaire and Charlevoix, a guest spot on WNMC radio and their debut appearance at the Good Works Collective, a wonderful venue in Traverse City. Thanks to all of The Potter's Field's friends who helped make this northern exposure happen!
Looking ahead, let me just remind you that the second annual Potter's Field Halloween Spooktacular at Crazy Wisdom Bookstore and Tea Room in Ann Arbor is just around the corner! Please join us on Saturday, October 29 for a night of thrills, chills, and Creepicana music as only The Potter's Field can perform it - the fun begins at 8:30 p.m. You should know that costumes are strongly encouraged, and cheap and tacky (yes, both cheap AND tacky) prizes will be awarded to those that come as they're not! Last year, John appeared as Napoleon Dynamite, and Rochelle was a zombie pin-up girl. I can hardly wait to see what this year has in store - please join us, won't you?
Thanks to all of The Potter's Field friends and fans for your continued support and enthusiasm - you're the best!

August has been a busy month for The Potter's Field! Work continues at a fast and furious pace on the upcoming CD, and John and Rochelle have enjoyed performing at many wonderful locations throughout Michigan.
The highlight of this month, however, had to be the Riverfolk Festival Songwriting Contest (part of the 2011 Riverfolk Festival and Jam Camp). John, as many of you know, is a stellar songwriter. He presents tightly cohesive and often profoundly moving lyrics in combination with finely honed and well-crafted music in a blend that entices a wide range of emotions from listeners -- inspiring, encouraging, moving, and sometimes just plain delighting the audience! John submitted two songs to the Riverfolk Songwriting Contest this year, "Don't Look Down When You Go," and "One-Eyed Bird." All contestants (over 20 songwriters, many with two songs) were asked to perform at The Ark on Tuesday, August 2, before a panel of judges that included folk icon Chris Buhalis and Ark founder Dave Siglin. Contestants were allowed to perform with one or two band-mates. Knowing that their tight blend of harmonies would only add to the presentation, John asked Rochelle to accompany him. Many incredibly talented songwriters performed that evening, but John's song "Don't Look Down When You Go" was selected as one of the three finalists, along with the sweet sounds of Kelsey Pray and a gritty and intense offering from Andy Witowski -- three great songs, indeed!
We've got another great resource - you can now listen to and purchase music from The Potter's Field Band Camp site! Special deals are brewing! We'll be handing out discount & download codes at shows or via our newsletter in the future. Also, be watching for special song offerings. Right now you can head over to the Band Camp site and pick up a bouncy new song called Happy Is the Man for only thirty-five cents! Recorded in the basement studio, Happy Is the Man features John singing and playing mandolin and Rochelle on kazoo!
See y'all at Band Camp!
10/15/11 is the goal date for our first full length CD release! What have we done??? We're working very hard to make this date and we hope that you will be pleased with what we're doing. Less that six months! Back to work...
Hey everyone, if you were watching American Idol tonight you may have heard a very familiar voice!
Way to go, partner!- J
Rochelle and John will be opening for Mike Mangione & The Union Saturday, March 26, 8pm at the Trinity House Theater in Livonia Michigan.
"Songwriter and musician Mike Mangione, along with his band The Union, embark on a new tour that will cover a lot of ground this year. For Mangione, touring has become a mainstay of his career. It is a means and an end. Touring allows Mangione the opportunity to connect with people and to try out new material, and perhaps most important, to survive. Mangione has remained an independent touring artist for over seven years. That he has maintained independence in this age of DIY and indie-model renaissance is perhaps not surprising, but that he has remained so by choice and that it has worked, surprises even Mangione himself. Now, on the dawn of his third release, Offering, the first with his official band, Mangione plans on continuing one CD, one fan, and one step at a time towards the blossoming career of a self-made independent." - http://mikemangione.com/bio/
